Bon Voyage!
The transition students went sailing on Pensacola Bay Saturday May 2, 2009 for their monthly group activity. This was the first time any of the teens had been sailing, and they all thoroughly enjoyed it. Captain John with Lanier Sailing Academy, which is in downtown Pensacola by the Fish House, gave everyone a turn at the tiller (steering the boat) and did a great job of discussing the basics of sailing. The group learned a lot about wind direction and how it affects the sailboat’s speed. They also learned how to tell which direction they were going (North, South, East, or West) by how the Sun hit their faces. One student mentioned the fact that you can tell when the sails are “lefting” or losing the breeze because they start flapping very loudly. After their exciting sailboat , they headed over to the Marina Oyster Barn for a delicious seafood lunch.
Thank you Captain John and Lanier Sailing Academy!
Summer Transition begins next month on June 15 and will last for four weeks. The students will be staying on the beach in Panama City Beach for three weeks. The theme for this year's program is Government. Activities planned include meeting the Mayor and touring City Hall, having lunch with the Panama City Police Department, and fishing in Frank Brown Park. The last week will be split between the visiting the State Capital to meet politicians, FAMU & FSU to learn about college life, and roughing it in the wilderness at the Suwannee River State Park.
It is not too late to sponsor Summer Transition 2009, so call us at 477-2663 to see how you can help make this year's program a success.
